Plans to change the municipal boundary surrounding the Brantford Municipal Airport are being put on hold, as the City of Brantford and County of Brant have jointly agreed to pause the process.
The proposed boundary adjustment has been under consideration for several months and would have brought the City-owned Brantford Municipal Airport and surrounding lands into the City of Brantford’s municipal boundary.
The idea was driven in part by the City’s long-standing interest in having the municipal boundary reflect its existing ownership and responsibility for operating the Airport, while also creating a path toward a financially strong and sustainable future for the facility.
Earlier this year, the City and County worked with the Office of the Provincial Land and Development Facilitator to develop a Memorandum of Understanding outlining proposed terms for the boundary adjustment.
Since then, staff from both municipalities have been working on the next stage of the process: finalizing a restructuring agreement that would be needed before a formal restructuring proposal could be submitted to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
However, timing has become a major factor.
With the restricted period leading into the upcoming municipal election process approaching, officials determined there was no longer enough time to complete the remaining work and give residents an adequate opportunity to review the proposed agreement and its supporting materials before a decision would need to be made.
Rather than rush the process, both municipalities have agreed to press pause.
The decision does not close the door on future discussions surrounding the Airport or the relationship between Brantford and Brant. Instead, officials say the work completed so far can provide a foundation for future conversations about the Airport’s long-term success and the continued cooperation between the two municipalities.
City of Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis and County of Brant Mayor David Bailey also expressed their appreciation to everyone who contributed to the process, including the Office of the Provincial Land and Development Facilitator, the Honourable Robert Flack, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Ministry staff, as well as municipal staff from both Brantford and Brant.
The proposed boundary adjustment has involved significant work from both municipalities, and officials emphasized that the progress made to date will not be lost.
With the process now paused, future discussions can build on the groundwork already completed while allowing appropriate time for consideration, collaboration and public review.
Public Meetings Cancelled
As a result of the decision to pause the initiative, the previously scheduled statutory public meetings have also been cancelled.
The City of Brantford meeting scheduled for Monday, August 10, 2026, and the County of Brant meeting scheduled for Wednesday, August 12, 2026, will no longer take place.
For now, the Brantford Municipal Airport remains within the existing municipal boundary arrangement, while the City and County turn their attention to the upcoming municipal election period and leave the door open for future discussions.
The pause marks a change in direction for a proposal that had been moving through the municipal process, but both municipalities say the collaboration and work completed so far could prove valuable as they continue looking toward the long-term future of the Airport and the broader Brantford-Brant relationship.
