IPW Wrestling: A Pillar of Entertainment and Community in Brantford
Brantford, ON – If you’re looking for high-octane entertainment with a strong community spirit, look no further than Independent Pro Wrestling(IPW). This local wrestling promotion, formerly known as Ontario Pro Wrestling, has been captivating audiences and supporting charitable causes since 2002.
A Brief History of IPW Wrestling
Mike Shea, a lifelong wrestling enthusiast and the visionary behind IPW Wrestling, has been organizing wrestling events since the early 2000s. Initially operating under the Ontario Pro Wrestling banner, Mike’s ambition grew in 2005 when he sought to unite various wrestling promotions across Ontario. Although the collaboration didn’t materialize, it sparked the rebranding to Independent Pro Wrestling (IPW).
In 2009, Mike partnered with Tim Ferguson, who initially joined to manage the music and DJing at events. Tim’s role quickly evolved, becoming a key collaborator with Mike. This year, following several years of significant growth, they welcomed a third partner, Jayson Doak, who now oversees booking and talent management.
IPW Wrestling has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Starting with events at J’s Place in Brantford, the promotion now hosts shows at the Polish Hall on Pearl St. and other venues across Ontario. Over the years, IPW has raised funds for notable causes like the Juravinski Cancer Centre and the CIBC Run for the Cure in Listowel.
Other Faces Behind the Scenes
Les Lucas manages graphics and camera work, ensuring every event is visually stunning. The team has also grown to include Shawn Emmitt and a video crew, and their shows are now aired on Rogers TV in multiple cities, including Brantford, Kitchener, and Waterloo.
What Sets IPW Independent Pro Wrestling Apart
IPW is not just another wrestling promotion. It offers a unique blend of athleticism and theatrics, described by fans as a fusion of Shakespearean drama and rock concert energy. The atmosphere at an IPW show is electric, with stunts, great athletes, and enthusiastic crowd interaction.
Memorable matches over the years include Kobe Durst vs. Jon Jon Tavious in Listowel, Brodie Kee vs. Ron Falco at J’s Place, and Tyler Tirva vs. Tomer Shalom at the first Canada Day Cup in Brantford. These events highlight the high caliber of talent and the intense rivalries that keep fans coming back.
Community and Fan Engagement
IPW’s connection to the community is deep and multifaceted. From charity fundraisers to local events, IPW is a staple in the Brantford area. The promotion’s Canada Day Cup tournament has been a crowd favorite at the Brantford Canada Day festival since 2015.
The fans play a crucial role in IPW’s success. Without their support, there would be no IPW. One notable fan, Al Riddick, is known for his vast collection of wrestling memorabilia and his cosplay at events and comic cons. Fans can also get involved by joining the street team to help promote events and share posts online.

Upcoming Events
Mark your calendars for the upcoming IPW shows at the Polish Hall at 154 Pearl St. in Brantford on September 21 and November 30. Additionally, there’s a special fundraiser for the Juravinski Cancer Centre at the Germania Club in Hamilton on November 3. These events promise to deliver the excitement and community spirit that IPW Wrestling is known for.
A Personal Touch
For Mike, IPW Wrestling is more than just a business—it’s a family affair. “IPW means everything to me. We are a real company planning to grow and expand, but it is also a family company that my kids and Tim’s kids have helped out at the shows with and still do”. Tim adds “It’s something my kids and I enjoy doing together. I love hanging out with my guys at the show and going out after together”.
They both also emphasizes the importance of independent wrestling promotions in the larger wrestling industry. Independent Wrestling is the training ground for the WWE. The indie guys and girls are not just here for quick fame. They are putting the time in.
A Message to the Fans
“We always say ‘Declare Your Independence’. That isn’t just a catchphrase we put on a shirt. We mean it. Go check out an independent show near you. It’s the best $25 you will spend, and every seat is a ringside seat,” Mike encourages.
