Beloved Brantford Jazz Festival Announces Farewell Concert
BRANTFORD, Ontario — For almost two decades, Frank and Nancy DeFelice have poured their hearts and souls into the Annual Brantford Jazz Festival, a cherished event that has become a staple in the local cultural calendar.
The festival has seen performances by legendary artists such as Al Jarreau, the Count Basie Orchestra, Matt Dusk, and Brantford’s own Kennie Marco, who have all graced the main stage at the Sanderson Centre. Harmony Square has buzzed with activity as vendors set up shop and locals enjoyed the vibrant sounds from the nearby stage.
However, when the pandemic struck, the DeFelices had to adapt. In October 2020, the festival pivoted to a special TV broadcast on Rogers Community TV. This was followed by another broadcast featuring performances by Johannes Linstead, Jimmy Stahl Big Band, Shuffle Demons, Luis Mario Ochoa, Kennie Marco, Carol Welsman, Shakura S’Aida, and many more, which was uploaded to YouTube. In 2021, two special broadcasts aired on Rogers Community TV in October and November, ensuring that the music continued despite the challenging times.
In 2022, instead of one large festival, a series of jazz performances took place at Hudson Public, allowing jazz enthusiasts to enjoy live music in a more intimate setting.
Now, after 18 incredible years, the Brantford International Jazz Festival is preparing for its farewell concert. The event will support active and veteran service men and women and will feature the World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra and displays from The Canadian Military Heritage Museum. Formed in 1956, the Glenn Miller Orchestra is considered to be one of the greatest big bands and the longest-touring band of all time! They are hugely popular and sought after for both concert and swing dance engagements.
The farewell concert is scheduled for Sunday, November 10, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Sanderson Centre. Tickets are priced at $68, with group rates available.
As the community bids farewell to this iconic festival, it is a time to reflect on the joy and cultural enrichment it has brought to Brantford over the years. The dedication of Frank and Nancy DeFelice has left an indelible mark on the city’s cultural landscape, and their efforts will be remembered fondly by all who have experienced the magic of the Brantford International Jazz Festival.
