When you talk about Brantford icons, it’s hard not to start with Stan’s Fries. For 75 years, this little red chip wagon has been serving up crispy, golden fries that are as much a part of the city’s fabric as the Grand River and The Great One.

A Chip Wagon That Became a Legend
Stan’s Fries began in 1950, when Albert Wawzonek parked his chip wagon in downtown Brantford and named it after his son, Stan. What started as a simple operation quickly became a local favourite.

Over the years, the wagon moved locations, from its original downtown spot to a popular spot across from the Sanderson Centre, and eventually to the old Zellers parking lot, where it is now.  Through every move, one thing never changed: the fries.

Fries and Memories Go Hand in Hand
Like many locals, I have my own Stan’s story. I first remember the wagon in the Market Street Square area back in the ’80s. I was 13, hanging out downtown with friends, and Stan’s was always the final stop before walking home. It wasn’t just a snack … it was a rite of passage.

Now, years later, I bring my kids to the North End location, and every bite still tastes like Brantford childhood.

Two Great Locations
You can now find Stan’s Fries at two great locations. In the north end of Brantford you will find one of the chip wagons parked at the Fairview Crossing parking lot at the corner of Fairview Drive and West Street (in the Zehr’s parking lot). For those closer to downtown you will find the other trucked parked behind the Sanderson Centre beside the Brantford Transit Bus Terminal on Darling St.

Stan’s Fries operates seven days a week at the Fairview North End location and six days a week at the downtown location. No fluff. No fuss. Just crispy fries, cold drinks, and the kind of comfort food that brings people together. Oh, and just like the old days, it’s cash only. No tap, no debit, no chip readers. So swing by the bank first, then swing by the wagon.

So come hungry, skip the ketchup, and celebrate a piece of Brantford history, one golden fry at a time.
