Safe Families Canada is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting families in crisis in our community.

They do this by providing temporary care for children and assisting parents. Their mission is to prevent child neglect, keep families together, and reduce the need for foster care. They aim to achieve these goals by rallying the local community around this cause.

Safe Families Canada believes by opening hearts and showing support within the community, children and families can be protected against being torn apart by the foster system. The organization is built on principles of compassion, early intervention, and community involvement, helping families navigate difficult times and maintain stability.

Safe Families Canada operates through a network of volunteer Host Families who provide short-term care, as well as Family Friends who offer mentorship and support to parents.

Safe Families Canada steps in before a crisis escalates to the point where children might need to be removed from their homes. They operate on a preventive model that involves:

• Host Families: Volunteers who temporarily care for children, offering them a safe and nurturing environment while their parents work through personal challenges.
• Family Friends: Volunteers who mentor and provide emotional support to parents, helping them cope with the stresses that led to the crisis. They might assist with practical needs like babysitting, transportation, or simply being a listening ear.
• Resource Friends: These are volunteers or donors who provide tangible resources like food, clothing, or financial assistance to help the family get back on their feet.
• Church and Community Involvement: Safe Families Canada collaborates closely with churches and community organizations, which often serve as the backbone for volunteer recruitment and support.

By focusing on keeping families together and preventing the need for foster care, Safe Families Canada significantly impacts communities. Children are less likely to experience the trauma of separation from their parents, as they stay with volunteer families in a home setting rather than entering the foster care system. Meanwhile, parents receive the support they need to overcome temporary challenges, such as financial difficulties, health issues, or a lack of a support network. Additionally, the organization fosters a sense of community responsibility and involvement, encouraging volunteers to play an active role in supporting vulnerable families, thereby strengthening the community as a whole.
